A GUIDE TO BREEDING HORSES ELIGIBLE FOR INSCRIPTION IN THE LG PRE (P.R.E. STUD BOOK)

• What is a P.R.E. Horse?

A P.R.E. horse is one inscribed in the P.R.E. Stud Book which is held in Spain and now managed by the breeder's association ANCCE (Asociacion de Criadores de Caballos Españoles).

There is only one Stud Book for the P.R.E. horse in the whole world and it is held and managed in Spain .

• What are the correct denominations for the breed?

P.R.E. Horse, PRE Horse, Pura Raza Española, and Purebred Spanish Horse.

Andalusian, Iberian, Baroque and other such denominations do not represent this horse and should not be used when referring to the Purebred Spanish Horse. They should generally be regarded along with the cross-breds that lack the quality controls and purity as well as the official documentation of the Spanish Stud Book. Those known as Carthusian horses are a line within the Purebred Spanish Horse breed.

• What is the difference between a P.R.E. or Purebred Spanish Horse and a Pure Spanish Andalusian?

A P.R.E. or Purebred Spanish Horse is one inscribed in the Spanish Stud Book in Spain known as the LG PRE ANCCE, it has a registration code (codigo) and a passport with a Green Carta containing a detailed description, pedigree and seals of the LG PRE. The LG PRE has a selection scheme designed to develop and improve breeding standards.

The Pure Spanish Andalusian is an Australian registry not connected in any way to the LG PRE or Spanish Stud Book, although registered horses are descendants of horses with Spanish origins. Entry into this registry is based only on parentage. There is no selection scheme to maintain or improve a breed standard. This registry is managed by the AHAA, for further information please contact the association.

• ELIGIBILITY FOR INSCRIPTION IN THE LG PRE

For a horse to be eligible for inscription in the LG PRE, BOTH parents must be inscribed and have obtained Basic Breeding Approval (first step in the selection process).  Foals and adult horses can apply for inscription if they comply with these requirements.

The image shows the sticker added to the passport of a horse after it obtains Basic Breeding Approval.

• What is the P.R.E. selection scheme?

It is a scheme designed to allow only selected stock to breed on, which provides clear guidelines of the breed characteristics and type as well as a means for breed improvement.

• The three levels of selection:

Basic Breeding Approval - Horses are evaluated (valorated) at three years of age by an authorised LG PRE person who travels from Spain to ensure they are of minimum standard to become breeding stock. Horses have to achieve the minimum height, and be free of any of the disqualifying conformational defects such as a ewe neck, fallen crest, monorchid, chriptorchid and remain true to the breed type. The LG PRE regulations state that Basic breeding stock can be bred by live cover only. No AI is permitted. If a horse does not pass the evaluation it retains it's papers as a P.R.E. horse but lacks the right to have their progeny inscribed.

Qualified Breeding Stock - Horses that have passed basic approval can present to a Tribunal of Qualified Breeding Stock (TQB) to become Qualified or Calificado, and will be subjected to a detailed veterinary examination which includes x-rays of leg joints and full reproductive organs examination as well as a ridden test. Only Calificado horses are able to be bred by Artificial Insemination.   Currently there are no Calificado horses in Australia .

Elite Status - This step is currently being developed as the highest status of breeding stock for those horses with proven ability to transmit excellent characteristics to their descendants.

• Can I breed my P.R.E. mare to a stallion before he has been presented to an evaluation for basic breeding approval?

Eligibility for inscription in the LG PRE ANCCE

It will now be possible to inscribe the products that were born or conceived by a stallion prior to him being valorated, but only after he is presented and passes a basic breeding evaluation. (The application for inscription can only be made AFTER the stallion has passed the basic breeding evaluation and been declared APTO.)

Breeders have to understand that there is a risk to breeding to a non-valorated stallion, because if for any reason (death, injury etc) the stallion is not presented to the evaluation or he does not pass, the products will NEVER be eligible for inscription.

In the past this was not possible because it was not possible to obtain cover certificates for coverings that took place before the stallion was presented to the valoration, and without the cover certificate the inscription could not take place.

Now the LG PRE ANCCE will issue the cover certificates needed to inscribe products already conceived from Jan 2007 onwards, but these can only be issued AFTER the stallion has passed the evaluation.

If the coverings took place before 2007 (when FESCCR managed the LG PRE), the LG PRE ANCCE will issue a new document called a "declaration of birth" and which can accompany the inscription documents (FESCCR can no longer issue cover certificates or any other paperwork now that they are no longer managing the Stud Book.)

Please note that mares could always have already born products inscribed once they passed the evaluation.

Can I breed my P.R.E. mare to a P.R.E. stallion which is I.A.P.1?

Not if you wish to inscribe the product in the LG PRE. The initials I.A.P.1 were given to parent horses that for one reason or another were not evaluated or seen by the authorised LG PRE personnel during the time when the LG PRE was open in Australia . They may have died or the owner did not wish to present the horse in front of the Spanish delegation, but their progeny was being presented for evaluation. The LG PRE was opened in Australia 2001 and closed on the 31st December 2004. From the moment of closure progeny of I.A.P.1 horses can no longer be inscribed under any circumstances.

• Can I breed my P.R.E. mare before she is evaluated?

While the ACPRE-Australia Inc. Breeders Code of Ethics states that mares should only be bred after they are 4 years of age, giving time for the evaluation to have taken place, a mare can be presented to evaluation with a foal at foot, and if she passes, the foal will be eligible for inscription in the LG PRE.

We hope you find this helpful and ask that you forward this information to anyone that you know is interested in breeding Spanish Horses and encourage them to become fully informed before making any decision.
